A proper diet is essential to help keep your teeth strong and healthy, as well as regular brushing and flossing. Your diet should provide adequate amounts of six nutrients: calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamins C and D, and fluoride. Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel by making it more resistant to acid attack. The amount of fluoride in your diet depends both on the level of the mineral in the water supply where you live and in the soil where the vegetables you eat grow. Fluoride is also found in seafood.
After you eat something sweet, your teeth are attacked by acids for up to an hour. You can fight tooth decay by limiting sugary foods to mealtimes, snacking on fresh fruit or raw vegetables, and by cleaning your teeth immediately after every meal. Dentists also say you should take your time and brush thoroughly, ideally spending two or three minutes each time.
